Understanding the source
Information has a history: who produced it, for what purpose, under which conditions and with what limitations. Examining provenance helps determine how much weight a source can reasonably carry.
Making reasoning examinable
Methods connect source material with conclusions. Clear assumptions, distinctions between observations and estimates, and attention to contradictory evidence make analytical reasoning easier to assess.
