The platformization of the enterprise
How modular platforms, APIs and modernized applications can reduce structural complexity while accelerating digital products and AI adoption.
Read articleConversion analysis should diagnose lost intent, not pressure every visitor
A conversion rate compresses different people, intentions and constraints into one ratio. Define the outcome and the population with a chance to complete it. Someone seeking support, checking eligibility or returning after purchase is not failed demand. Segmenting by intent, entry point, device and journey stage prevents teams from optimising a blended number that explains little.
Model the journey as observable decisions rather than page views. For each step, capture the action, required information, elapsed time and recoverable errors. Open and closed funnels answer different questions, and event definitions must preserve sequence. Funnel tools show steps, segments and elapsed time, but locate loss rather than explain it.
Diagnosis combines behaviour with qualitative evidence. Replays, support contacts, usability sessions and error logs can reveal uncertainty, hidden prerequisites, slow responses or inconsistent promises. Investigate sharp differences by cohort and quantify the value at stake. The highest-volume drop-off is not always the best opportunity if it reflects weak intent or an control.
Experiments should test a causal hypothesis: which friction is removed, for whom, and what unintended effect might follow? Protect guardrails such as returns, complaints, lead quality, accessibility and margin. The OECD reports that nine in ten surveyed consumers across 20 countries had encountered dark commercial patterns; coercive urgency and obscured choices can lift a local metric while damaging autonomy and trust.
The operating loop is diagnose, prioritise, test and monitor. Report completion and abandonment with error recovery, downstream quality and time to value. Preserve holdouts where practical and watch whether gains persist. Conversion analysis is strategic when it helps willing users act with less uncertainty while protecting people for whom non-conversion is the correct outcome.

Strategic challenges
The challenge is distinguishing meaningful user needs from internal requests, technical possibilities and backlog pressure.
The challenge is comparing initiatives with different economics, dependencies and time horizons on a common basis.
POV
Transformation should remove outdated operating logic before technology is used to scale or automate it.
Distributed intelligence should be adopted only where the operational benefit outweighs the added complexity of managing more technology locations.
Strategic impact
Behavioral evidence and controlled experiments help identify which journey changes materially affect user decisions.
Redesigned workflows, roles and decision mechanisms allow digital capabilities to alter performance rather than decorate it.
What we observe
Principles lose value when patterns are too abstract, approvals too slow or implementation guidance remains incomplete.
Exploration can attract attention, but inventorying vulnerable systems and planning migration may carry more immediate strategic relevance.
