The platformization of the enterprise
How modular platforms, APIs and modernized applications can reduce structural complexity while accelerating digital products and AI adoption.
Read articleEmerging technology strategy manages options before certainty is available
Emerging technology combines plausible value with unresolved performance, ecosystem and adoption. Waiting for certainty forfeits learning; scaling on enthusiasm converts uncertainty into exposure. Strategy should decide where to watch, experiment, partner, acquire capability or abstain. The unit of management is an option with explicit evidence and conditions, not a forecast presented as fact.
Start from strategic problems and constraints, then scan technologies that could change their economics or feasibility. Assess maturity across technical performance, standards, suppliers, skills, infrastructure, regulation and customer readiness. Separate the technologys progress from the organisations ability to use it. A mature component remains premature without data, process or governance foundations.
Use staged commitments. A research probe answers whether a mechanism works; a pilot tests fit in context; a experiment tests operating value; scale requires repeatability and economics. Each stage needs a hypothesis, budget, evidence threshold, risk boundary and exit. Preserve interoperability and data portability so learning does not become accidental lock-in.
Governance must anticipate as well as approve. OECDs frameworks for emerging technologies and 2025 work on anticipatory governance emphasise foresight, stakeholder engagement, experimentation and learning. Scenarios should include misuse, second-order effects and regulatory change. Independent challenge matters when sponsors are invested in the narrative.
Portfolio reviews compare option value, evidence, uncertainty, relevance and delay cost. Stop experiments that no longer answer important questions; accelerate when adoption conditions are visible. Emerging technology strategy creates advantage by learning earlier and committing later with better evidencenot by predicting every winner or accumulating disconnected demonstrations.

Search visibility emerges from technical accessibility, useful information and authority around subjects audiences genuinely seek.
Its relevance depends on whether proximity, sensing or hands-free interaction materially changes how users work, decide or engage.
Strategic challenges
The challenge is distinguishing revenue growth from demand that disappears once discounts or paid traffic are removed.
The challenge is sequencing technical and operational change while managing dependencies across data, processes and teams.
POV
Commerce performance should be judged after discounts, media spend, fulfilment and customer quality are considered.
Third-party risk should be judged by exposure and recoverability, not by the amount of documentation collected.
Strategic impact
Defined priorities help align content, media and measurement around customer behavior rather than platform availability.
Assessing process fit, economics and integration requirements helps organizations distinguish scalable use cases from isolated experiments.
What we observe
Large device estates can generate cost and exposure without creating value when decision processes and ownership remain undefined.
Strong sales can conceal discount dependence, high media cost, weak repeat rates and deteriorating contribution margins.
