Social media strategy should concentrate participation where it can matter

Social platforms are distinct environments, not interchangeable distribution pipes. Audiences visit them with different habits, expectations and tolerance for institutional voices. Choose a credible rolereputation, expertise, community, service, talent or demandand decline channels lacking contribution or capacity.

Audience reach alone is a weak selection criterion. Ofcoms Online Nation 2025 shows wide variation in UK platform reach, daily use and growth, including YouTube reaching 94% of online adults and TikTok 56% in May 2025. These figures show opportunity, not fit; research must locate priority communities and influential voices.

Each chosen platform needs a native editorial proposition. Define recurring subjects, formats, participation norms and a response model rather than reposting identical assets. The strongest material gives people a reason to save, discuss or share: evidence, interpretation, utility or access. Creators and experts need genuine knowledge, with sponsorship and conflicts disclosed.

Operating risk belongs in the design. Establish ownership for moderation, escalation, account security, records, approvals and misinformation response. Platform dependency, algorithm changes and audience harm require limits on reliance. Ofcom found 59% of UK internet users who encountered their most recent potential online harm in June 2025 did so on a social media service, reinforcing the need for responsible participation.

Measure the role selected: relevant reach, engaged attention, expert recognition, community health, qualified progression, service resolution and downstream outcomes. Separate organic learning from paid amplification. Review opportunity cost against other channels and stop activity that produces only vanity metrics. Social strategy creates value when focused participation earns attention and trust that can travel beyond the platform.
