Capital allocation under radical uncertainty
How companies can preserve strategic flexibility while directing capital toward the opportunities most likely to create durable value.
Read articleWhat problem does tokenization actually solve?
Tokenization is valuable only when it removes a specific economic friction. Turning an existing record into a token while preserving the same intermediaries, reconciliations and settlement delays merely changes the wrapper. The investable question is narrower: which costly break in issuance, ownership, transfer, servicing or redemption becomes materially different?
The strongest cases join the asset and its rules on a programmable ledger. Delivery-versus-payment can synchronize cash and ownership; a shared record can reduce bilateral reconciliation; automated eligibility or coupon logic can compress manual work. Fractionalization widens access only where distribution and liquidity exist. The ECBs 2024 explorationover 50 trials and experiments, 64 participants and nearly 1.6 billion settledshows feasibility, not automatic commercial value.
Start with the current transaction journey. Measure settlement time, failures, trapped collateral, intermediary fees and exception costs. Then model the tokenized journey end to end, including identity, custody, cash, servicing, reporting and recovery. Value is the net change across the system, not one faster component.
The design also relocates risk. Atomic settlement can reduce principal exposure yet increase intraday liquidity needs; smart contracts replace some manual errors with code, oracle and governance failures. Legal ownership, finality and redemption must survive outside the ledger. Isolated platforms recreate fragmentation, while a weak settlement asset imports credit risk.
Proceed only when cost, speed, access or risk improves enough to exceed migration and operating complexity. Pilot the hardest lifecycle eventnot a showcase transferand compare it with a modernized conventional alternative. If value depends mainly on future network effects, treat the initiative as an option: stage capital, define adoption gates and preserve a clear exit.

Strategic challenges
Engineering capacity, suppliers, leadership attention and operational readiness can constrain portfolios before funding does.
Scope, capacity, technology and timing decisions can lock in economics and risk long before execution performance becomes visible.
POV
A contract can allocate liability, but delivery strategy must determine who is actually capable of managing the underlying exposure.
Every major commitment should survive the evidence available today, not rely on the assumptions that secured approval years ago.

Sequencing commitments around evidence allows companies to pursue growth while preserving the ability to change direction.
What we observe
We often see urgency, sunk effort and executive influence override inconsistent evidence and weak comparative economics.
We often see upside and downside cases change numbers without changing the decisions, priorities or strategic responses being tested.
