When finance must become a decision engine
How finance functions can move from control and reporting toward adaptive planning, stronger insight and faster enterprise decisions.

The cheapest financing in a stable base case can become expensive when conditions change. Capital structure should support strategy across outcomes: fund assets and growth, absorb shocks and preserve the ability to act. The relevant objective is not minimum cost, but risk-adjusted flexibility after maturities, covenants, liquidity and control implications.
Model the liability stack as a timeline. Map debt maturity, repricing, currency and covenants, committed facilities and expected cash generation against operating needs. Include working-capital seasonality, collateral calls and investment options. Aggregate leverage ratios can conceal a concentrated refinancing date or a liquidity gap that appears before accounting distress.
Stress coherent conditions: lower earnings, higher rates or spreads, delayed disposals, currency moves and reduced market access. Measure interest coverage, covenant headroom, cash runway and refinancing dependence. The ECBs May 2026 review reports tighter corporate credit standards and high debt-service burdens even as aggregate euro-area balance sheets remain broadly resilientso tails matter more than averages.
Compare instruments by more than coupon. Fixed and floating debt shift rate exposure; short maturities preserve repricing but raise rollover risk; equity absorbs loss but dilutes control and returns; leases and supplier finance still consume future cash. Value liquidity under stress, and align maturity with the life and reversibility of the assets financed.
Set a target range and explicit buffers, then define triggers for refinancing, hedging, issuance, distributions or investment restraint. Preserve capacity before markets demand it; emergency capital is rarely cheap. A sound structure earns its carrying cost by keeping strategic choices open when forecasts fail, while still imposing enough discipline to prevent idle balance-sheet capacity.

POV
Stabilization should create time to change the business model, cost base or capital structure causing the weakness.
Profitability strategy should address how value is created, not treat every margin problem as an expense problem.

Heavy cycles can create false precision when assumptions age quickly and reallocation mechanisms remain rigid.
