Decentralized technologies matter only where they change trust, ownership or exchange

Their relevance depends on whether distributed records, tokenization or digital assets solve a real coordination or transaction problem.

Decentralised technology is justified by a different coordination model, not a different database

These technologies matter when parties must coordinate without one operator controlling records or execution. If a trusted authority can run the process efficiently, conventional architecture may be simpler, cheaper and easier to govern. Ask which trust, ownership or settlement constraint changes, not whether blockchain can represent it.

Map participants, assets, rights and failure incentives. Identify who writes, validates, reads, corrects and resolves disputes; define the legal event that transfers ownership and the party liable when code or data is wrong. Shared ledgers reduce reconciliation only with agreed semantics and source data. Cryptographic agreement cannot verify an inaccurate real-world claim entering the system.

Architecture follows the coordination need. Permissioned and public networks trade privacy, participation, fees, governance and finality differently. Tokenisation can combine asset records with programmable transfer conditions. The BIS 2025 analysis notes that a unified ledger may or may not use DLT: the value lies in integrated messaging, reconciliation and transfer, not decentralisation itself.

Economics must include governance and exit. Model integration, custody, keys, compliance, transaction costs, throughput, upgrades, incident response and interoperability. Smart contracts require testing, change control and fallback procedures; immutability is hazardous when obligations or data must be corrected. Concentrated validators or gateways may recreate intermediaries and obscure accountability.

Pilot an end-to-end transaction with counterparties and legal review. Compare settlement, reconciliation, error, control and cost with today. Scale only if the new trust model creates value and responsibilities remain enforceable. Decentralised technology succeeds when it removes a coordination frictionnot when distribution becomes an objective in itself.
